Start with primary evidence
We prioritize original publications and datasets from FAO, WFP, national statistical offices, agriculture ministries and IPC. Secondary reporting can help identify developments, but important claims should be traced to original evidence.
Every number needs context
We aim to state the publishing organization, reference period, geography, units and meaning of important statistics. A forecast is labelled as a forecast. A price index is not presented as a count of food or a direct measure of household hardship.
Separate claim types
- Observed: recorded for a stated period.
- Estimated: calculated from available data and subject to revision.
- Forecast: a projection based on current evidence and assumptions.
- Scenario: a possible outcome if specified conditions occur.
- Interpretation: an explanation of what evidence may mean, with limits stated.
Updates and corrections
Time-sensitive pages should show dates and be revisited when new official releases change the story. Corrections should be specific and proportionate. Send a correction or question.
